The Ship for World Youth (SWY) is an initiative organized by Japan’s government with the collaboration of the United Nations University. The programme offers a unique cultural exchange and youth leadership training experience. Bringing young people from different countries together on board a ship, it fosters intercultural understanding, encourages discussion of global issues, and develops multicultural leadership skills.
The programme brings together approximately 200 young people from Japan and various countries around the world, who travel together for several weeks on board a ship. During the voyage, they participate in:
- Seminars and workshops on global issues (sustainable development, peace, inclusion, etc.)
- Multicultural and leadership projects
- Cultural exchanges and country presentations
- Activities ashore in the countries visited by the ship
Who can apply?
- Young people between 18 and 30 years old.
- Nationals of the countries invited each year by the Government of Japan – in this case, Spain
- Advanced level of English.
- Experience in community work, social leadership or youth associations.

What does the programme cover?
The Government of Japan covers the costs of international transport, accommodation, food and activities on the ship and during port visits. Upon completion, participants become part of the Ship for World Youth Alumni Association (SWYAA), an international network that organises social impact activities and projects around the world.
